SYNOPSIS OF OPERATIONS
1941 to May 1948
Father and son, Leonello and Arnold Mattei, formed a partnership, working primarily in masonry, cast stone and flat cement.
May 1948 to Present
L. Mattei and Son was incorporated, with Arnold Mattei as President and operations expanded. The company's history follows:
1951 to 1954
Did sidewalk, curb, footings, floor slabs and related flat cement work for numerous new communities including: Clifton Park Apartments (995 apts.), Kynlyn Apartments, Brookview Apartments, Woodland Apartments, Brookside Park Section I and the Wilmington Merchandise Mart, one of America's first suburban shopping centers. Sidewalk and curb work were also done for the State Highway Department on Lancaster Avenue (approximately nine miles of sidewalk). During this period the company continued doing smaller jobs with new emphasis placed on planning for larger projects.
1954 to 1957
General contracting operations were initiated. In 1954, Brookside Park Section II was purchased. Land development, building, and sales departments were consolidated. The successful marketing of two hundred fifty-six split level homes began and numerous additional companies were formed in order to accomplish each phase of the operation.
Concrete contracting continued and projects in Birchwood Park and Dunleith Estates were completed during this period.
Approximately ten acres were purchased and developed in Forest Hills Park as building sites for nine large custom homes.
In 1957 twenty acres of land was purchased in a portion of Liftwood Estates. Sixteen custom homes were built and sold.
1962
L. Mattei and Son was a subcontractor for all concrete work at the Mitchell Product Company's new plant in Millsboro, Delaware. Three hundred thousand square feet of slab work required temporarily moving part of Mattei's operations to lower Delaware.
1965 to 1982 (Custom Homes)
L. Mattei and Son purchased various building lots in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Fourteen large custom homes have been built on these sites.
1973
Universal Equipment Rental Corporation was created in August, 1973. With Arnold Mattei, Jr. as a principal in this company as well as head of field operations, the heavy equipment operation of Universal Equipment Rental Corporation proved to be quite compatible with the general contracting operations of L. Mattei and Son.
Present
In August 1987, Arnold Mattei formed Mattei Corporation and acquired Southgate Center. This one hundred acre industrial park is located at the intersection of 1-295 and US 13. With this acquisition the company successfully entered into a market in which they could develop and build large industrial facilities.
Since development is being done under the name of Mattei Corporation the construction operations of L. Mattei & Son, Inc. were absorbed by Mattei Corporation in June of 1990. The excavation and sitework operations of Universal Equipment Rental were consolidated into Mattei Corporation in May of 1992.
In June of 1994 a 17.2 acre tract was purchased at the Pencader Corporate Center in Glasgow, Delaware and since 1998 an additional twelve (12) and thirty-five (35) acre tracts have been acquired at the same location. Since 1994 the Pencadersites have been developed with five flex buildings totaling in excess of 590,000 square feet with a future building of 184,000 square feet under construction.
With Robert Mattei now President of Mattei Corporation, business continues to grow. The success of this company has been built with hard work and determination and the careful allocation of resources by the Mattei family and its dedicated employees.
